The ViewBirmingham Review by Charlotte Allen 18/02/2009

The Handmade Burger Co can literally be found at the Water’s Edge in Birmingham’s Brindley Place, settled between the bustling pubs and clubs of Broad Street and the Mailbox’s chic restaurants and boutiques. The restaurant is a perfect blend of the two areas, achieving a vibrant but laid back atmosphere.

The Venue
The blend is reflected in the greeting from the friendly staff, who welcome with a smile and then invite diners to sit down wherever they wish. There is something for almost everyone, with leather sofas at low wooden coffee tables overlooking the canal, high, breakfast bar style stools and tables, semicircular booths and more formal tables and chairs for groups of many sizes. Far from being over ambitious, Handmade Burger Co has managed to accommodate a vast range of clientele without cluttering the premises.

The restaurant’s interior has been thoughtfully designed, with open spaces, archways and steel girders conscientiously nodding towards Birmingham’s industrial history. This is stylishly pulled off, with black and white bold print wallpaper covering an entire wall and the pattern replicated on the menus.

The Atmosphere
Customers place their order at the bar, which adjoins the open kitchen area. Staff are on hand and happy to answer any queries without harassing customers to make decisions or go any faster than their chosen pace. This instantly puts diners at ease, allowing a comfortable atmosphere.

You could visit Handmade Burger Co with any size group on any occasion; big groups of friends for birthday celebrations, family meals out or a well earned break from a day’s shopping. Handmade Burger Co seems to reverberate with a balance of energetic catch-ups and people watching the world walk, sail or cycle by.

The Food
Possibly the most impressive thing about Handmade Burger Co is the extensive menu. Divided into broad sections including beef, chicken, fish and vegetarian options, customers can choose from diverse takes on the classic burger. Global cuisines have influenced the recipes, with dishes like the Caribbean Salsa burger (£6.85) made with prime beef and topped with a sweet mango and lime salsa that has a slight ginger kick.

The menus proudly declare that burgers are made with ‘traditionally reared, grass fed traceable beef.’ Diners whose ethical conscience extends to a vegetarian diet will not be disappointed, with no less than 5 vegetarian options available. The flamed peppers and goat’s cheese choice is highly recommended, with peppery rocket offset by creamy goat’s cheese (£6.95). Sides of chips (£2.65) and onion rings are also a must, with chips being hand cut on the premises, and a wide range of dips and sauces to accompany.

The Drink
The house wine, £10.95 a bottle, red or white, is from Australia and the rest of the menu is extensive in its nature and global influences. Bottled beers, like Peroni, are £2.95 a pop, but there are also beers from around the world, from traditional British ales to European lagers. The usual range of soft drinks, teas and coffees feature, as well as a list of milkshakes to attract those choosing dishes from the junior menu – or just big kids at heart.

The Last Word
With a wide range and diverse takes of everything on offer at Handmade Burger Co, there truly is something for everyone.
